Hone your upper arm definition with these three simple exercises

It’s easy to forget about our triceps – they’re hidden away at the back of our arms and don’t make much of an appearance until sleeveless season comes along. But these often neglected muscles make up more than two-thirds of your upper arms – that’s a whole lot of muscle helping you move throughout your day, from hauling yourself out of bed to unpacking your Ocado delivery or pouring a Friday night G&T.

Here, Strong Women trainer Alice-Rose Miller from our Strong Women Collective shows you three exercises that build stronger tricep muscles – even though your arms may be out of sight right now thanks to chunky knit weather, they’re definitely not out of mind.

This is the low-impact workout your joints are craving

Just because it’s your dumbbells’ day off doesn’t mean you can’t still build stronger muscles. A calisthenics workout not only incorporates resistance training by using your own body weight, but it’s more gentle on your joints and connective tissue – so you can still get stronger every day, weights or no weights.

Transport your tastebuds to the Mediterranean – while supporting muscle recovery

Life in the Mediterranean brings all the glories: sun, sea and the well-documented nutritious diet filled with favourites such as olive oil and hummus. While most countries in the area have been removed from the UK’s safe travel list (hang in there, Greece), send your tastebuds on a savoury trip instead.

These stuffed aubergines are high in magnesium, while fresh quinoa and sharp sun-dried tomatoes promote muscle recovery and energy balance. Nasunin, the pigment responsible for aubergine’s purple skin, is also a powerful antioxidant that has been shown to protect cells against damage.

While they can’t promise 30C+ temperatures, they do pack in many all-important nutrients. If you close your eyes, you might just be able to hear the sound of the waves off the Sicilian coast…
