It’s a good thing we can’t go out, because you’ll be glued to these epic TV shows on Sunday
Two incredible period dramas arrive on TV this Sunday, telling real stories of very distinct worlds in recent history. First is the much anticipated Small Axe series directed by the Oscar-winning Steve McQueen. An anthology of five films about the West Indian community in London from the late 60s to early 80s, it debuts 9pm Sunday on BBC One with Mangrove, based on the real story of the Mangrove Nine.
After repeated targeted raids by racist police, local restaurant owner Frank (Shaun Parkes) and his activist friends (including Letitia Wright as British Black Panther leader Altheia Jones-LeCointe) demonstrate against the harassment and end up in court fighting for freedom. “This is unflinching, visceral and full-hearted storytelling,” says Stylist’s entertainment director Helen Bownass. “It’s just the start of a game-changing celebration of Black life.”
Taking in a very different sphere of London is the return of The Crown. The fourth season of the sumptuous Netflix drama about the royal family charts the arrival of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (Gillian Anderson) and Princess Diana (Emma Corrin) on the royal and political landscapes – and of course personal ones, too. “Emma Corrin is mesmerising as the naïve young kindergarten assistant who became one of the most famous women in the world, while Gillian Anderson is uncanny as the UK’s first female prime minister,” says Helen. “And while series three was, let’s say not my favourite, season four might just be the best yet.”

If you’re still bemoaning the fact that the beauty advent calendar you’d been coveting sold out before you could extract your Monzo card from your wallet, a rather excellent consolation prize went on sale this week. OK, it’s not an advent calendar, but the new Female Founders Beauty Edit box from Cosmetic Executive Women (CEW) contains 20 bestselling full-size products by iconic female-founded brands such as Charlotte Tilbury, Kate Somerville and Elemis. Repeat after us: Twenty. Full. Size. Products.
Worth over £700, the box retails at less than £170, making it a savvy way to stock up on luxurious festive gifts, not to mention some presents for yourself. Our highlights? The Ambient Strobe Lighting Blush by Hourglass (RRP £38); Take Off Touch Down Biodegradable Cleansing Wipes by LBB Skin (RRP £25); and Retinol Night Serum by The Organic Pharmacy (RRP £31.90). Even better, 10% of profits go to The Eve Appeal, which funds research into gynaecological cancers.
