Mastered your DIY tie dye skills? It’s time to try ice dye...

Last year, many of us took to scrunching and dunking old clothes in dye to make our WFH wardrobes a little more cheerful (and to chew up the endless hours of lockdown 1.0). But if 2020 was all about tie dye, there’s another technique on the rise: ice dye. What sounds like a wacky scientific experiment is actually a genius way of producing intensely-hued watercolour designs. Simply soak your clothes, place ice cubes on top of the fabric, sprinkle over dye powder and let the melting process dictate how the colours bleed; unlike tie dye, you’ll be surprised by the patterns every time.

Like the aesthetic but CBA to try it yourself? Get the look via Lululemon’s pre-dyed lavender yoga pants (£88), HeartOnMySleeveLab’s crystal-inspired sweatshirt (£47.24, Etsy) or Lucy & Yak’s made-to-order jeans (£95). But if you fancy having a go at home, Forgrins’ eco-friendly kit (£12.89, Etsy) is suitable for beginners and comes with everything you need to dye up to 10 T-shirts. Once you’ve got the hang of the process, get experimental: you can create all the colour combinations your heart desires with a handful of fibre-reactive dyes (£4.95 each, Handprinted), a packet of soda ash (£4.50, Empress Mills) and this brilliant step-by-step guide. Your new lockdown hobby awaits.

Listen to how this woman’s best friend delivered her baby

While everyone warns you that having a baby will upend your world, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to creating a family; and surrogacy is one process which often brings surprises that no-one can see coming. Add in the fact the process is still relatively new (and undiscussed) in the UK and you’ve got a lot of emotions to deal with.

In this week’s episode of Nobody Told Me… we hear one woman’s story about how her best friend became her surrogate and  the unexpected ways surrogacy can change the lives of everyone involved in creating a family. Nobody Told Me… is Stylist’s podcast exploring the personal life lessons of brilliant women in their own words. Season two is brought to you in partnership with Clinique, who for over 50 years have been empowering women through great skin care backed by dermatologist expertise.

Hand-painted homewares are enjoying a renaissance – here’s where to shop the trend

A little bit cottagecore, a little bit Charleston House: hand-painted homewares have caught our eye, and however you want to categorise them, we’ve fallen hard. The vibe is eclectic, bohemian and colourful, as evidenced by the hand-painted vases by curated online store By Alice (£65) and Dutch brand &Klevering (from £31.44, Made In Design). Shoreditch boutique Artisans & Adventurers, meanwhile, stocks hand-painted items from around the world in its online shop: we love the patterned Indian soap dishes (£16) and carved Ghanaian mask (£85).

Etsy is a great place to hunt for one-off hand-painted furniture – this colourful chair from IC Illustrations (£125) is a gem. Obsessed with lighting? Artist Sarah Blomfield paints her made-to-order lampshades according to customers’ design specifications (from £70), or try Bloomsbury Revisited’s lampshades (from £60), which are inspired by Virginia Woolf and co. Pop them on top of a playful lamp base by Courthouse Interiors (£87.50) and there you have it: big Charleston energy.
