Why it’s essential to make time for a ‘power hour’ first thing every morning

When it comes to having a sacred hour or two to spare, our brains are usually too fried to do anything meaningful such as work on that candle-making side hustle or smash a 10K. But taking charge of your time is essential to hitting your goals, according to Adrienne Herbert, author of the newly-released Power Hour. Here, she explains why spending an hour on yourself first thing every day is so important.

Increase essential vitamin D levels with this warming winter salad

Salad in winter? Before you keep scrolling, we promise this nourishing bowl is slicker than your average green salad. This creamy goodness comes warm – so it’s guaranteed to hit the spot, even on chilly evenings.

Seasonal kale is packed with minerals, including sleep-aiding magnesium so you can enjoy some restful shut-eye (even on the nights you’re wired from watching The Serpent). Plus, the dark leafy green pairs perfectly with hearty mushrooms – one of the only plant sources of vitamin D, which is not only essential for supporting your immune system but strengthens muscle fibres so you can continue to hit your fitness goals.

Top with a velvety vegan sauce made from heart-healthy cashews and garlicky, toasted croutons to fulfil your carbohydrate (and crunch-loving) needs. Winter’s most underrated meal just got a new lease on life.

Strong Women Training Club’s fitness instructor Janine George is on the search for kit that can keep up with her heavy weight-lifting.

What? Blue Elvin P1-001 sports bra, £85, and P1-002 leggings, £120

What is it? Activewear engineered with impact technology to protect the body from barbell bruises and scrapes.

The verdict: “I’m 5ft11, so I was praying that these leggings would be long enough to reach my ankles and high enough at the waist. Sadly, the length didn’t quite meet expectations, but the fit was so snug around my glutes and waist that it no longer mattered. What got my attention the most were the small, padded triangles along the neck of the sports bra and on the shins of the leggings – these ‘integrated impact panels’ are meant to cushion the barbell when it hits your body.

I went to the gym before lockdown while wearing this kit, where I did some free flow with my barbell training: deadlifts to front squats, upright rows, presses, lunges and then bent rows. Now that we’re back in lockdown, I’ve had to really push myself to train, but I noticed that I feel more mentally ready and physically energised to work out when I wear this stylish set.

I do a lot of heavy lifting and love the fact that these pieces have cushioning for better comfort. With the padded protection, it’s as though I’m wearing breathable armour and I can just go for it, with no second guessing.
