This bestselling author is back with a novel that tackles religion, addiction, grief and more

It takes a brave writer to take on a theme as big as evangelical faith versus science, even without adding addiction, grief, immigration and the never-ending quest to belong into the mix. But it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Yaa Gyasi – author of 2016’s bestseller Homegoing, a gripping family saga about the transatlantic slave trade set over seven generations – has done just that with her second novel, Transcendent Kingdom (Viking).

“Family is once again a key theme in Gyasi’s much-anticipated follow-up,” says Stylist’s email content director, Gemma Crisp. “It centres on Gifty, the daughter of Ghanian immigrants who moved to Alabama before she was born, and her struggle to reconcile her now-abandoned childhood faith with her burgeoning career as a neuroscientist. However, it’s Gifty’s professional motivation that provides the most compelling thread of this novel, as she struggles to come to terms with the opioid addiction that ended her older brother’s life when she was 11 and sent her usually stoic mother into crippling bouts of depression. While Gyasi’s second novel doesn’t have the epic narrative that I loved in Homegoing, it is a compelling look at a woman’s struggle to move on from the devastating effects of her family falling apart in front of her eyes.” £14.99, Bookshop.org

If you’re a fan of Anna Jones’ cooking, here are 3 ways to get your fix

Since her first book was published in 2014, Anna Jones has built up a devoted following thanks to her relaxed and visual approach to vegetarian food. Her recipes, which make liberal use of fresh produce, spices and citrus, tend to be achingly photogenic yet surprisingly straightforward – and like Nigella Lawson, she has a friendly, lyrical way with words that draws you in even if you’ve no intention of actually cooking.

So it’s no surprise that there’s been plenty of hype around Jones’ latest cookbook One: Pot, Pan, Planet (£26, HarperCollins), out this week. To celebrate the book’s release, Jones is joining fellow stylish food enthusiast Laura Jackson in a livestreamed conversation hosted by Fane this evening: tune in for chat about her favourite new recipes and the importance of kindness in cooking (6.30pm; from £10). If you’re in London, you can also sign up to the eco-friendly takeaway subscription service DabbaDrop, which has collaborated with Jones on a limited-edition One-inspired menu. Tuck into Jones’ dishes – including aubergine and peanut stew with pink onions and apple and ginger cake – when they’re delivered to your door on 25 or 26 March (from £30 for a fortnightly subscription).

And if you can’t wait for a taste of One, click the button below to access a recipe from the new book. Your lockdown cooking fatigue will suddenly be a distant memory…
