Master pull-ups with this 10-minute workout that improves shoulder and grip strength

Loading up a squat rack with tons of plates is impressive, but it’s seeing someone fly through pull-ups that really makes our jaw drop. This enviable bodyweight move requires a whole lot of strength in your lats, shoulders, biceps and even in your hands. Strengthening each of these body parts will help them work together to get you where you want to be – over that bar.

“Pull-ups require strong lats and biceps as well as grip strength to hold yourself on the bar, plus a strong core to keep alignment and stable shoulders,” says fitness trainer Emma Obayuvana. “This workout’s moves use isometric holds and slow tempos to increase the time under tension and the intensity on the muscles for a strong upper body that will get you over the bar.”

Here, Risqat Fabunmi-Alade from our Strong Women Training Club demonstrates three exercises that will improve shoulder, core and grip strength. Just think: with every rep, you’ll be closer to hitting your pull-up goal.

Help ward off osteoporosis with this calcium-rich, plant-based stirfry

If you’re anything like us, you grew up being told that you had to drink a glass of milk every morning to support your growing bones. That’s not any less important now that you’re an adult – women in particular need calcium in order to maintain strong bones.

“Women are more susceptible to osteoporosis as they tend to experience a more rapid loss of bone density during the first few years following menopause,” explains nutritionist Sophie Dillion from Fresh Fitness Food. “This can lead to fractures, breaks, or loss of mobility if severe, so it’s essential we are consuming our recommended calcium intake.”

But if you’re vegan, dairy-free or not up for glugging a pint of cow’s milk, this mineral-packed dinner ticks all the boxes. Made using tofu and spinach – two of the best plant sources of calcium – these sweet and sour tofu noodles will keep your bones as strong as your biceps.

Stylist’s senior beauty writer Hanna Ibraheem discovers her workout inspiration in the unlikeliest of places – her new eco-friendly activewear.

What? Reformation Ivy Ecostretch Cropped Tank, £52 and Ecostretch High Rise Leggings, £94 in Morning Glory.

What is it? A sports top and leggings designed for low-impact training and made of eco-friendly materials.

The verdict: “I’ve spent the past year relying on baggy pyjama T-shirts and WFH sweats, rather than quality activewear, when exercising. Sure, I’ve still had a decent workout, but it hasn’t felt quite as satisfying. Which is why Reformation’s Ivy Ecostretch collection was exactly what I needed to feel motivated again.

I don’t usually feel comfortable walking around in just a sports bra, but this one has a slightly longer length for more coverage. Plus, the wide straps and double-layered bodice provide additional support. While it isn’t the most supportive top in the world – the brand does specify that it’s best for low-impact activities – it was perfect for yoga, weight training and even under a hoodie during my daily walks. As for the leggings, I often struggle with the waistband rolling down as I move about – but not with these. The high waist sits comfortably around my midsection and stays there through every squat, burpee and downward dog.

The fabric is made of 87% Repreve polyester that’s sourced from recycled plastic bottles, keeping in line with the brand’s commitment to sustainability. And can we please take a minute to admire the gorgeous shade of sky blue that makes me feel good even before my post-workout endorphin rush arrives? I’m sold.”
