The BFI’s post-lockdown film season is bursting with incredible musical talent

Here’s a reason to be cheerful: cinemas are set to reopen on 17 May, and BFI Southbank is celebrating the return of the silver screen with a new film season focused on iconic Black women in music and entertainment. This morning, tickets go on sale for Her Voice: Black Women From The Spotlight To The Screen, a series of socially-distanced screenings spotlighting Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Josephine Baker and more through music documentaries, biopics and feature films.

Top of our to-watch list is recently-released Ella Fitzgerald: Just One Of Those Things, a documentary exploring Fitzgerald’s incredible journey from big band singer to one of the 20th century’s most legendary stars. If classic musicals are more your thing, head for a screening of Stormy Weather, an all-singing, all-dancing affair from 1943 starring Grammy-winning performer and civil rights activist Lena Horne alongside an entirely African-American cast. And because there’s no such thing as too much Beyoncé, we’ll be booking ourselves front-row seats to watch Dreamgirls, the Oscar-winning 2006 film loosely based on the story of The Supremes. Prepare to hum Listen all the way home… 17 May-30 June; from £8; Belvedere Rd, London, SE1

“The Best Thing I’ve Ever Bought”
Designer Anya Hindmarch, author of new book If In Doubt, Wash Your Hair: A Manual For Life (Bloomsbury), shares the one purchase that brings her immense joy

“I have a sad obsession with the art of organisation so in 2011, I asked my brother to give me a label maker. With five kids, I wanted to get everything organised: a file per child, a label per cupboard, so there could be no messing with the system.

Dymo’s Letratag has multiple font styles in five sizes which you can make underlined or bold, and the display lets you see the label before you print it. It makes me feel in control when actually I am out of control. When I label everything, I feel heroic and happy – although my kids say it makes me a fun tampon!” Letratag LT100H Label Maker, £19.99, Dymo
