| Soho’s new yakitori bar is bursting with adventure and flavour (and a lot of chicken) | If you’re vegetarian or vegan, you should probably keep scrolling. Because while there’s a smattering of non-carnivore menu options at this buzzy new Soho establishment – fresh tofu, shitake mushrooms, some seafood for pescatarians – the clue is in the name: Humble Chicken. The brainchild of Angelo Sato, who worked with Michelin-starred chef Clare Smyth when he first arrived from Tokyo before moving onto Eleven Madison Park in New York (aka, the World’s Best Restaurant 2017), it’s inspired by Japan’s izakayas – where people go for a casual drink and bite to eat after work.
“Tightly focused on chicken, the menu is mostly delivered via yakitori – skewers cooked over authentic bincho-tan charcoal on a traditional grill imported from Tokyo which gives the meat incredible flavour,” says Stylist Loves’ editor Gemma Crisp. “It’s an unabashedly comb-to-tail offering, so don’t be surprised to see ‘soft knee and cartilage’, ‘achilles’, ‘heart’ and more interesting body parts on the menu alongside the tamer ‘wing’, ‘breast’ and ‘thigh’. The more adventurous you are, the greater the rewards: this is a team who know their way around the (open) kitchen. And don’t miss the opportunity to wash it all down with a glass of koshu, Japan’s native wine variety – its minerally chill is the perfect palate cleanser for the insanely good marinades and sticky sauces you’ll be mopping off the plate with your finger while seat dancing to the excellently cheesy music (don’t judge).” 54 Frith St, London W1D

| This stunning debut novel tackles race, money and power in modern Britain | The last few years have seen the release of several razor-sharp novels about millennial Black American women’s experiences in majority-white workplaces: think Such A Fun Age by Kiley Reid, Luster by Raven Leilani and The Other Black Girl by Zakiya Dalila Harris. In her first novel Assembly, out now (Hamish Hamilton), Natasha Brown examines similar themes of race, class and power from a Black British perspective – resulting in one of the most remarkable books you’ll read this year.
“At just 100 pages, you could read Assembly in one sitting – but it packs a serious intellectual and emotional punch,” says Stylist Loves’ deputy editor Moya Crockett. “The novel’s unnamed narrator is the descendant of Jamaican immigrants, working in a high-powered job in the City. When she’s offered a big promotion, then invited to a grand party thrown by her white boyfriend’s rich parents, she knows she’s supposed to feel grateful for the chance to climb more rungs on the British societal ladder. Instead, she’s consumed by dread and filled with rage at white Britain’s refusal to reckon with its colonial past. Pulsing with cold fury, this is an unashamedly literary novel about what happens when a Black British woman decides to stop chasing someone else’s definition of success.” £12.99, Bookshop.org
Natasha Brown will be discussing what it means to be successful at the Stylist Literary Festival on Sunday 13 June – click below for more details
