If you’re vegetarian or vegan, you should probably keep scrolling. Because while there’s a smattering of non-carnivore menu options at this buzzy new Soho establishment – fresh tofu, shitake mushrooms, some seafood for pescatarians – the clue is in the name: Humble Chicken. The brainchild of Angelo Sato, who worked with Michelin-starred chef Clare Smyth when he first arrived from Tokyo before moving onto Eleven Madison Park in New York (aka, the World’s Best Restaurant 2017), it’s inspired by Japan’s izakayas – where people go for a casual drink and bite to eat after work.
“Tightly focused on chicken, the menu is mostly delivered via yakitori – skewers cooked over authentic bincho-tan charcoal on a traditional grill imported from Tokyo which gives the meat incredible flavour,” says Stylist Loves’ editor Gemma Crisp. “It’s an unabashedly comb-to-tail offering, so don’t be surprised to see ‘soft knee and cartilage’, ‘achilles’, ‘heart’ and more interesting body parts on the menu alongside the tamer ‘wing’, ‘breast’ and ‘thigh’. The more adventurous you are, the greater the rewards: this is a team who know their way around the (open) kitchen. And don’t miss the opportunity to wash it all down with a glass of koshu, Japan’s native wine variety – its minerally chill is the perfect palate cleanser for the insanely good marinades and sticky sauces you’ll be mopping off the plate with your finger while seat dancing to the excellently cheesy music (don’t judge).” 54 Frith St, London W1D
