2021 was the year of the immersive art experience – our Instagram feeds have been clogged with pictures of Yayoi Kusama’s long-awaited Infinity Mirror Rooms at Tate Modern since it opened in May, followed closely by not one, but two installations celebrating the famed Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh (the first is now in Manchester after a stint in Kensington Gardens, the other in Shoreditch). And set to continue the trend in 2022 is a never-before-seen experience dedicated to the legacy of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, opening in London in the spring.
Showcasing over 300 projections, Mexican Geniuses: A Frida and Diego Immersive Experience (16 April-5 June; £27.40) will transport visitors into the world of two of the most prolific artists of the 20th century. Bringing to life the beauty, emotion and transcendence of Frida and Diego’s works, along with a virtual reality experience that transports you to Mexico, the exhibition will give an insight into the lives of the iconic couple, including the influence they had on each other. Although the location details are still under wraps, you can book tickets now. Also setting up in London next year at an unconfirmed location is Klimt: The Immersive Experience (21 July-30 September; £19.90) which will splash the golden palette of the beloved Austrian modernist over a 20,000 square feet, two-storey venue using state-of-the-art video mapping technology. Because why just look at art when you can become part of it?
