Can drinking coffee first thing in the morning negatively affect your energy levels?

Lying in bed with a perfectly made macchiato is one of the small joys in life. Even the earliest alarm clock is bearable if you know that an espresso, cafetière or hit of instant is on the way. But every now and then, studies and experts make their way back into journals and news headlines to warn against reaching for that early morning caffeine hit – instead, they recommend that we abstain from coffee until 10am.

Why? It’s all to do with our stress levels. To see if timing has any discernable impact on energy, Strong Women editor Miranda Larbi spent two weeks delaying her own morning cuppa – this is what she discovered.

Elle Linton is a personal trainer, Adidas Runners LDN coach, fitness blogger and Liv Cycling ambassador.

The one thing that’s made me a better runner is… community. The benefits for my own running are endless: creating consistency which builds my running fitness and providing support and coaching to train effectively. Running with people of different abilities challenges me and ensures that I don’t overdo it.

When I’m too tired to work out in the mornings, I… listen to my body. Then I can decide whether to get more sleep or teach a class and schedule in a nap later. I’m aware of how important sleep is for recovery, and how important recovery is for performance and progress – so I prioritise it highly.

The one thing I always have in my gym bag is… BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids) mixed with a litre of water. It keeps me hydrated while working out, but also helps to maintain and build lean muscle, aids recovery and supports my immune system. Protein intake is so important across all our life stages, especially for female physiology. I try my best to ensure I eat enough and supplement when appropriate.

Ease period cramps and improve gut health with this comforting plant-based chilli

Few things in life can get you down like incessant period cramps. In fact, over 80% of those who have periods say they experience ‘significant PMS’ and cramping. One science-backed tip for reducing the severity is to eat more omega-3 fatty acids – something walnuts are rich in. In fact, walnuts are higher in omega-3 fat than any other nut and increase beneficial gut bacteria.

We don’t like to use the word ‘superfood’ but if we did, walnuts would be right up there – and this recipe shows just how versatile an ingredient it can be for savoury dishes. When it comes to that time of the month, serve this walnut chilli with rice, tacos or on a baked potato with a handful of grated cheese (whether you go plant-based or not is up to you). Second helpings guaranteed.
