Imagine if, a decade ago, everyone over the age of 18 gained a unique superpower. Everyone, that is, except you. In Extraordinary, Disney+’s new eight-part series – which has already been confirmed for a second season – that’s the situation of Jen, a painfully self-aware 25-year-old who couldn’t feel more adrift in this souped-up world if she tried. And so, with a little help from her friends, she sets out on a journey to find her maybe-superpower.
“On the surface, this big-hearted British series is about superpowers – or lack thereof – but it’s really about something hugely relatable: the quarter-life crisis,” says Stylist’s digital editor-at-large Kayleigh Dray. “While it’s bloody funny, it also addresses how raw and vulnerable it can feel to see all your friends leapfrog over you into the realms of ‘conventional’ success. In our world, that might look like a slew of engagements, or pregnancies, or property purchases. In Jen’s world, it’s… well, I will leave that for you to find out. Every single one of the talented cast shines but none more so than Máiréad Tyers, who was born to play Jen. I especially loved how the chemistry with her on-screen mum (Derry Girls’ Siobhán McSweeney) and BFF Carrie (Sofia Oxenham) highlights the important role that family and chosen family have in our 20s, too. In short, it’s a big yes from me.” Watch now on Disney+
