“I think that it’s really important that we have a female category and a male category. But then, where do non-binary and gender non-conforming people fit into that? I don’t know. I’ve literally sat and tried to think my way to the answer, and haven’t got there,” they added.

Even though the Brits and the Grammys have gender neutral categories for their awards, the acting industry, including the Academy Awards, remains largely gendered. However, Bill Kramer, CEO of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, said in an interview with Variety last year that the Oscars are “exploring this topic” for future awards. Yet, as Ramsey highlighted, changes in how awards are categorised would require an active effort to ensure that women are still recognised.
