At the institute, Anna meets Amir (Riz Ahmed), and the pair work with couples to strengthen their romantic relationships in some truly wild exercises.

A darkly comic sequence of lessons ensues that features an education in Hugh Grant’s romantic comedies, sniffing out your partner in a crowded room and giving yourself an electric shock when your loved one leaves a room. Yes, really.

It’s absurd and fascinating to watch, as the film examines if it is possible to grow an emotional, chemical connection between two people, and make love out of, often, nothing.

Yet, the machine’s credibility is questioned when Anna (Buckley) takes the test with her long-term boyfriend Ryan (Jeremy Allen White) and has a 100% connection. Even though they’re conclusively labelled as perfect for each other (they take the test twice to be absolutely certain), Anna feels as though the relationship is lacking something.

It seems when the risk is taken out of love, so too is the possibility for a deep connection and the thrill and excitement that comes with being in love. Anna and Ryan’s relationship also offers a brief insight into how comfortable people can become over time, where they co-exist together, but don’t actively work on their relationship. As Anna says, for a relationship to survive, it can’t just test positive, it has to be worked on every day.

When the seemingly impossible happens – Anna secretly tests her fingernail with Amir’s and finds she is a 50% match with him – we’re told that one person cannot scientifically be in love with two people, so Amir assumes that means he loves her, and Anna doesn’t return his feelings.

She does, of course. Anna is even willing to go so far as to rip off her remaining fingernails on his kitchen floor as she doesn’t believe in science anymore. Anna knows her feelings, and while she might be compatible with Ryan, she’s really in love with Amir.
