It was also adopted by some queer and femme communities, as it saw outsiders, Damian (Daniel Franzese) and Janice (Lizzy Caplan) help ground and guide Cady through her revenge-plot-gone-wrong against Regina. For many who came of age in the noughties, Mean Girls consolidated itself within pop culture, and still has a cult-following 20 years later.

So, just what’s kept its appeal alive? Feminist writer and author of You Could Be So Pretty and Girl Friends, Holly Bourne explains: “I think the film perfectly encapsulated the psychological warfare that breaks out among teenage girls around about the ages of fourteen – the viciousness, the popularity battles, the horrible rumours, the endless musical chairs of who is best friends with whom.

“It tackles this quite traumatic time in most girl’s lives with humour, killer one-liners, and relatable characters. The film shows it as a rite-of-passage, and it is, usually something we all come out the other side of.”
