Just when we thought we might’ve seen the last of Bridget Jones – walking down the aisle to Mark Darcy, finally – it was confirmed that a fourth Bridget Jones film was officially on its way, with several of our favourite characters reportedly reprising their roles.

What is the fourth film about?

The new film will be based on the fourth book in Helen Fielding’s series, Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, which sees Bridget in her early 50s navigating the world of social media and dating apps as a single mother of two young children.

The Hollywood Reporter confirms that Renée Zellweger will, of course, be reprising the lead role, while Hugh Grant will return as love interest Daniel Cleaver. But there’s no word yet on whether Colin Firth will make an appearance as Mark Darcy. In the book, Mark is revealed to have died, leaving Bridget a widow. But it’s not yet known if the film will follow the book’s plot or simply serve as inspiration.

We last saw Bridget and Mark in the 2016 film Bridget Jones’s Baby, where Bridget decides to focus on her singledom and career, only to be surprised by a pregnancy that has two possible fathers: Mark Darcy and Patrick Dempsey’s Jack Qwant. The third film ends in a seemingly happy way, tying up many of its loose strings.
