From one tyrannical school to another, we give you the 2018 sci-fi thriller Level 16. While created on a micro-budget, this indie film doesn’t scrimp and save where drama and thrills are concerned. Canadian writer and director Danishka Esterhazy delivers a suspenseful build-up laced with menace and horror, concluding with a cataclysmic reveal that shatters all illusions of trust and faith in humanity.

Level 16 follows students Vivien (Katie Douglas) and Sophia (Celina Martin) at girls’ prison-esque boarding school as they vow to uncover the ominous truth behind their captivity. Military precision is all they have known, with groups of girls assigned to different levels in the building, ultimately working their way up to, yes, level 16 after years of adhering to “feminine virtues” of obedience and cleanliness.

Given the school’s strict nature (there are exceptions to the routine for no one) and the omnipresence of head Miss Brixil (Sara Canning), their mission poses a major danger from the outset and it doesn’t take long until they’re running for their lives. But what will they do? Save themselves or persist with their mission to expose the truth… but die trying?
