Based on the love story of the same name by Robinne Lee, The Idea Of You centres on Solène (played by Hathaway), a 40-year-old single mum who strikes up an unexpected romance with the lead singer of August Moon, 24-year-old Hayes Campbell.

In an interview with Vogue in 2020, author Lee was asked about this inspiration, to which she responded that “inspired is a strong word” but “the seed was planted” after researching his band a few years ago and finding out that Styles often dated older women.

When Solène steps in to chaperone her teenage daughter’s trip to the Coachella Music Festival after her ex-husband bails at the last minute, she has a chance encounter with Hayes and there is an instant, undeniable spark between them.

As they begin a whirlwind romance, it isn’t long before Hayes’s superstar status poses unavoidable challenges to their relationship, and Solène soon discovers that life in the glare of his spotlight might be more than she bargained for.
