What is They Cloned Tyrone about?

Juel Taylor’s feature directorial debut sees Fontaine (Boyega) make some questionable life choices after the loss of his younger brother – such as, say, becoming a drug dealer.

When Fontaine is seemingly killed by a rival dealer one night, it seems like his story is over… until he mysteriously wakes up the next day. Cue him joining forces with Charles (Foxx), a self-proclaimed “entrepreneur”, and sex worker Yo-Yo (Parris) so that they can bust their way into an underground laboratory.

There, they discover a Fontaine clone, and realise they’ve stumbled onto a nefarious government conspiracy that puts countless Black lives at risk.

What are people saying about They Cloned Tyrone?

The film is being praised for its originality, as well as its grainy film-stock look, retro-inspired costuming, powerhouse performances, excellent soundtrack and pulpy reference points.

More important than all of that, though, is the fact that They Cloned Tyrone manages to say something important while still being incredibly entertaining.

“For me, this film talks about socioeconomic cycles and cycles of despair and trauma, and I think Juel speaks a lot about what’s blame and what’s responsibility, and where those two things may overlap and where they don’t,” Parris told Okayplayer about the project.
