One of the legends of cosy crime, Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club series continues to take the world by storm – with millions of copies sold and a fifth book on the way in 2025.

However, outside of the literary world, the first book in the series is being adapted for the big screen and, like many cosy crime fans, we’re very excited. The first book in the series was published in 2020 and follows four friends – Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron – who meet up once a week to investigate unsolved murders.

But who will be taking on these iconic roles? Well, here’s everything we know so far about the Thursday Murder Club film adaptation.

**What is the plot of The Thursday Murder Club?**

“In a peaceful retirement village, four unlikely friends meet up once a week to investigate unsolved murders. But when a brutal killing takes place on their very doorstep, the Thursday Murder Club find themselves in the middle of their first live case. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron might be pushing 80, but they still have a few tricks up their sleeves,” reads the synopsis.

**Who will star in The Thursday Murder Club?**

Steven Spielberg acquired the adaptation rights from Osman, with his company Amblin Entertainment behind the adaptation and Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Mrs Doubtfire, Harry Potter) writing and directing. Now, Netflix is also attached to the project.

Three of the four leading roles in the film have been cast, with Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan and Ben Kingsley set to play the retirement sleuths – Elizabeth Best, Ron Ritchie and Ibrahim Arif respectively.

On his podcast The Rest Is Entertainment, Osman said the production will take place from “the end of June to September” in the UK and hinted at other casting details, saying: “Joyce, we’re still in negotiations but again the name is the one that most people shout at me in the street.” Intriguing…
