But then, Mabel’s imaginary friend offers some words of comfort. He too felt lost at 30. He was playing a teenager while his friends had either “artistic integrity” or “real jobs”.

“But it didn’t do me any good to compare myself to them,” he says. “The people who figure their shit out right away are boring. The late bloomers? People like us? We make the world go round.”

“You can afford to take your time, Mabel,” he adds. “What you can’t afford to do is waste it.”

In the midst of Only Murders’ outlandish, laugh-out-loud comedy, this scene holds the show’s heart – in many ways, the entire season is shaping up to be an ode to the late bloomers and their ability to “make the world go round”.

In fact, from its opening moments, the show hints at the idea of recognising the ‘late bloomer’. In a heart-wrenching montage, we see a young Loretta fall in love with the theatre, before spending a lifetime training, auditioning, and ultimately, failing – over and over and over again. As Charles puts it in the voiceover, it’s “near miss after near miss, until you realise that ‘near miss’ has become your life”.
