According to analysis by Sky News, industry experts say women are still seen as too much of a “risk” for the top slots because of a perception that festivalgoers prefer watching men. Some have also argued that the pool of female talent is “still too small” to find suitable headliners.

Last year, Glastonbury organiser Emily Eavis – responding to criticism of the festival’s all-male headliners – acknowledged that festival bosses have a role to play in developing new female talent. “It is difficult with female artists because there aren’t enough headliners. But we’re also creating them. We’re putting the bands and female artists on smaller stages and bringing them through all the time so I feel like the pool is going to be bigger soon,” she told the BBC last year.

Lipa and SZA’s bookings show that there’s no dearth of female artists capable of headlining major music festivals – they just need the opportunity. We can only hope in years to come that it will no longer be headline news when female artists headline music festivals.
