Jamie’s depression and self-harming behaviour is touched upon in the film but becomes a central focus in the second episode of the series. There’s a particular scene in the episode where Jamie severely self-harms at work and Emily is the one to find him in the bathroom.

“It’s a really graphic scene but it’s something we all worked on, including Stephen, to explore both Jamie and Emily’s characters and their relationship,” Walters says, adding that she and McMillan made the choice to not see each other for a couple of days and there was little to no rehearsal of the bathroom scene.

“We didn’t see each other at all until the moment I came in through the bathroom door in the scene as we wanted it to be real and organic, I had no idea what he’d look like so my reaction was one of real shock,” she explains.

Walters adds, “We also wanted to explore Emily in particular and dig a little deeper: what makes her tick? Why is she so lovely and serene all the time?” In the second episode, we see Emily go to an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting and we start to peel away at her sunny exterior to find some of the demons she’s struggling with.

In the AA meeting, we also see Andy come in and join Emily and share a particularly moving conversation around Andy’s drinking. Walters and Graham have been married for nearly two decades but don’t often get to act on screen together. “We’ve been together for so long so we know each other really well,” Walters shares. “We’re very comfortable going into different characters that aren’t like ourselves, because it’s very easy to go back to ourselves. It’s always such a joy working with him.”

The pair also built their own company, Matriarch Productions, which Walters says “naturally happened” as they wanted to ensure stories from all backgrounds were being told and support under-represented talent in the industry. “Stephen and I come from humble beginnings and we’ve always wanted to use our platform to support people in taking that first step into this industry. Because as wonderful as this world is, it can be so hard to get your foot in the door.” It’s something they made sure to do with Boiling Point, which sees the cast made up of several newcomers.

But can we expect more from the series? Well, to the delight of fans, Walters is optimistic. “It’s definitely got a lot more mileage. It’s a character-driven show and we’ve only touched on a handful of characters. There are so many more stories to explore, so here’s to hoping!”
