What is Lost Boys And Fairies about?

The musical drama, in a nutshell, tells the story of Gabriel and Andy, a couple who dream of adopting a child – and the realities they face while attempting to do so.

Gabriel, a singer and “artiste-extraordinaire at Cardiff’s queer club-space ‘Neverland’” (per the series’ official synopsis) is still grappling with the same demons he has been plagued by since childhood, having grown up in a society that overwhelmingly treated being gay as a sin.

“He will need to embark upon a journey of self-discovery before he can truly begin to parent seven-year-old Jake,” the synopsis concludes.

Who stars in Lost Boys And Fairies?

Sion Daniel Young and Fra Fee take the lead as Gabriel and Andy respectively, while Elizabeth Berrington plays their social worker, Jackie.

Arwel Gruffyd stars as drag queen Berwyn/Fanny Ample, and Sharon D Clarke is Jake’s foster mother Claire. William Thomas brings the drama as Emrys, Gabriel’s father – with whom our lead shares a very rocky relationship.

Speaking about the groundbreaking series, Daf James – the series’ creator, writer, musical director and executive producer – promises a love story with the sort of universal themes that will resonate with anyone and everyone.

“One of the other really crucial themes is one of trauma and shame – specifically gay shame,” he said.

“Thankfully we’re living in a world now where gay people can adopt and get married. These are all things that when I was a kid, during the time of Section 28, I wouldn’t have believed were even possible. When I got married to my husband, standing there was so deeply moving because we could now speak ‘the love that dare not speak its name’ in front of our community and family – our tribe – it was just extraordinary.”

James added: “We exist in a space now where we feel relatively safe within our own communities. But it’s easy to forget what it was like as a child growing up with the trauma of thinking you are an abomination.” As well as the impact of that toxic shame, Lost Boys And Fairies aims to explore how “when you become a parent, you are made to revisit who you are as a child”, he continued.
