Netflix’s Wednesday: Christina Ricci said she was “flattered” to be asked to join the cast of Tim Burton’s reboot

The new Netflix series, which will follow Wednesday Addams throughout her time as a student at Nevermore academy, will be directed by none other than Tim Burton. Here’s everything we know about the show so far.

When Netflix first announced it would be bringing out a new Wednesday Addams series, we had our fingers crossed that Christina Ricci – who played the iconic character in the 1991 film The Addams Family – would be a part of it somehow. So, when we heard she would be taking on a role in the adaptation, we were hardly surprised.

However, it seems that Ricci was a bit more surprised. Clearly unaware of how iconic she is, she said she was “flattered” when Tim Burton asked her to be a part of the new show – albeit not to revisit the character of Wednesday.

Speaking in a new interview with Variety, in which she stayed quiet about her role in the show, she explained: “I was really flattered to be asked and to be asked by Tim. It’s nice to be a part of this next iteration of that character. It’s fun to watch and it’s fun to see other people’s takes on things and what they put of themselves into something like that.”

In a previous interview with Variety at a Yellowjackets fan event, Ricci also revealed her excitement for the new show, saying it was true to the “heart and soul” of the original.

“It’s super fun. I loved working with Tim [Burton],” she explained. “I worked with Gwendolyn Christie; it was amazing. And Jenna [Ortega, who plays Wednesday] is incredible.

“I saw some of the wardrobe photos before I went, so I knew [what she looked like in character] and I was like, it’s such a great modern take on Wednesday. It’s so true tonally to the heart and soul of [the original], but then it’s incredibly modern and it’s great.”

While we’re yet to learn when the aptly-titled Wednesday will grace our screens, we do know a bit about the cast and what to expect from the new series. Here’s what we know so far.

What is Netflix’s Wednesday about?

From her morbid curiosities and peculiar experiments to her pallid skin and iconic dark braids, it’s hard not to love the weird and wonderful Wednesday Addams.

So, when we heard that the character would be getting her very own live-action Netflix series – directed by none other than Tim Burton – it’s safe to say we were very excited.

The comedic eight-part series, which has been in development since October 2020, will follow the character throughout her time as a student at Nevermore Academy.

The show, which will see Burton take on his television directorial debut, is described as a “sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery” which will follow Addams as she grows up.

A press release for the show reads: “Wednesday attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago – all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships of the strange and diverse student body.”

The cast of Netflix’s Wednesday is shaping up to be pretty impressive.

While Ricci won’t be reprising her role as Wednesday, she will be starring as a yet-to-be-disclosed series regular.

Sharing the news on Twitter back in March, Netflix confirmed that Ricci will be joining the cast as an “exciting new character” rather than an iteration of her old role.

According to Deadline, Ricci’s depiction as Wednesday in the Addams Family movies struck such a chord that when this upcoming Netflix series was announced, fans of the franchise launched a petition calling for her to be cast in the show. Well, it looks like it worked.

While details about Ricci’s role are being kept under wraps for now, we do know that the titular character will be played by Jenna Ortega (The Fallout, You) while Academy Award-winning Catherine Zeta-Jones will star as matriarch Morticia Addams and Luis Guzmán (Narcos) as Gomez Addams.

Game Of Throne’s Gwendoline Christie will also be appearing in the show as Larissa Weems, the principal of Nevermore Academy who still has an axe to grind with her former classmate Morticia Addams.

Who has played Wednesday Addams before?

Of course, this isn’t the first time Wednesday Addams has been reinvented. Since the original Addams’ cartoons in The New Yorker, she has undergone a number of transformations, including the 2019 cartoon The Addams Family which saw Chloë Grace Moretz voice the character and the Broadway musical The Addams Family: A New Musical, which imagines Wednesday as an 18-year-old.

Then, of course, there was Ricci, who played Wednesday in 1991 movie The Addams Family when she was 11 and then reprised the role two years later in Addams Family Values

With so many iconic portrayals of Wednesday already out there – including Ricci’s darker, sadistic take in the original live-action films – we can’t wait to see who takes on the role this time around.

For now, then, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens next in the development of this exciting new series. We’ll update this page with the latest information when we have it, so keep your eyes peeled.
