Eating disorders on screen are often portrayed in very graphic ways. Why was it important to not feed into stereotypes?

I’ve been very, very conscious of the fact that eating disorders can be triggering and challenging for people and it’s an anxiety I carried the whole way through the process, wanting to do it well and do it right. It’s hard as an actor because, to a certain extent, you don’t have a lot of control in the creative process. You can put your input in and be like, “Oh, I’m not sure about this”, but ultimately, you don’t have much power. But I believed so much in the team and the scripts. This made me feel they were doing something good and something worth being a part of. It’s hard when you’re not part of that decision-making process, but you have to trust that you have a team with the right intentions and I really think everyone did on this show.

What had you seen of eating disorders in the media before, and how did those portrayals make you feel?

The first one I remember was Cassie in Skins when I was so young, 12 or something. And then To The Bone was quite controversial. I couldn’t watch that; I think I watched 10 minutes and I had to turn it off. But Everything Now felt like such a different representation to those previous ones as it focused on the humanity of a person, rather than the disorder itself. This also felt informative. I’ve had friends who have watched the series reach out to say, “I’ve actually learned so much about eating disorders that I had no idea about.” That’s felt really special.
