Set in a fictional town called Chadder Vale, the six-part series explores an insular community that shares a real distrust of outsiders. Five years before the drama begins, former Met police detective Riya Ajunwa (Wunmi Mosaku) arrives in town and has been waiting for a proper crime to investigate ever since.

Then, one night a local girl called Katie Wells (Rowan Robinson) disappears. Weird. What’s weirder is that the next day she reappears, seemingly totally fine. The inhabitants of the town remain unbothered, but Detective Riya thinks the whole thing is a bit… odd.

From there, a “series of strange happenings and increasingly shocking crimes” begins to unfold. The townspeople blame outside influences, such as the fracking site and its manager, Jim Bracknell (David Threlfall), but Riya is insistent that something else is going on, a view that gets a lot of the locals riled up. Sounds mysterious, right?
