10 trends to try from London Collections: Men

The second London Collections: Mens took place this week, and our brothers over at Shortlist.com have been reporting with all the catwalk and grooming highlights, plus the most dapper looks on the street. But after casting our sartorial eye over the A/W 13 menswear shows this season, we spotted more than one trend or styling trick we'd like to try ourselves. With more than one designer using female models on the catwalk, and an androgynous rather than strictly masculine feel to many of the collections (see Erin O'Connor in a slightly undone tux on the Hackett catwalk, and the winter florals at Katie Eary), it's as if we've been invited to steal some of these looks from the boys.
Here's our round-up of the menswear trends we want to try ourself next season - we'll be keeping an eye out to see if any of them translate to the women's shows come February.
1. Plaid

BELOW: YMC, James Long
Plaid, tartan, checks - this was the print to rule them all on the runway this season. Covering coats and shirts, the head-to-toe tartan suits as seen at Westwood and Hackett were our favourites.
2. Florals
Above: Katie Eary, street style
In the words of Miranda Priestley, "Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking" (delivered in a withering tone). But for A/W, Katie Eary's hot pink collection of eye-popping prints would be a breath of fresh air.
3. Mankles

The 'mankle' shows no sign of going away. What we women call "rolling up the hem of your trousers" is a classic summer look - try it when the temperature drops with a big coat and loafers for a new take on the trend.
4. Berets/Brown hats

On the catwalks, berets were the surprising headgear of choice. On the street, brown, floppy hats were popular. Either make a suitably chic winter cover-up.
5. Tailoring with an edge

From the head-to-toe prints at Topman to Erin O'Connor in her undone tux at Hackett, suiting took on a new lease of life on the catwalk.
6. 1920s hair

With The Great Gatsby coming out, short-haired girls could try this lacquered look for the party season for a bit of 1920s flair.
7. Kitsch Knits

Cartoon prints, animals - knitwear was festooned with kitsch motifs - we're fans.
8. Statement shorts
ABOVE: JW Anderson
We can't see many of our male companions donning these wool shorts with a trumpeted hem - but we love them.
9. Orange

BELOW: E Tautz, Topman
Orange has emerged of the colour of the season. A welcome bright shade in the winter months, stay tuned to see if it's as popular at the womenswear shows.
10. Hiking Boots

Sturdy hiking boots made a few appearances down the runway. We're hoping these take off, mainly for the practicality of the things.
