The fashion girl's guide to cold weather boots

As well as the freezing flurries and the excess of festive decorations, winter brings the need for boots. Loafers get packed away (too slippy), trainers get shelved (like sponges) and the only option is to get your sensible footwear out – or buy a new pair.

The sock boot made the unexpected transition from Demna Gvasalia’s creations on the catwalk to high-street feet a few seasons back – and it’s got sartorial staying power. Surprisingly wearable, they work with an above-knee hem (see Kendall Jenner) or, our preference, with a mid-calf maxi or cropped jeans. Trial the trend with Zara’s low-key charcoal pair.

Red over-the-knee boots – worn in lieu of tights – were the unexpected street style shoe at the a/w 2017 fashion weeks. The temptation for tack can make it tricky to wear, so cite Giovanna Battaglia Engelbert’s head-to-toe look (heart-shaped glasses optional) and remember: pointed toes only.

Picking for practicality? Hiker boots worn with ankle-swishing dresses are the answer to dressing smart in the snow.
