This edit from Stylist executive fashion director Kitty McGee covers your seasonal style…

After seasons of extremes (we’ve had maximal, embellished dresses and decadent, detailed accessories to sportswear inspired hoodies and trainers), autumn’s hero pieces are finally more wearable.

Think a modern take on heritage wear - feminine, elevated dresses, knitwear, coats and accessories, all providing the cosiest way to update your wardrobe for the new season.

These are the five pieces to cover your bases this autumn…

The midi dress

Midi-length skirts and dresses have been key for a few seasons now, but if the a/w 2018 catwalks were anything to go by, hemlines are getting even longer.

Ankle-grazing dresses are the ultimate in evening chic and this Seventies-inspired printed dress hits the mark for length and retro vibes in one.

Not only is it a ready-made evening option, but with a chunky knit and this season’s hiking-inspired ankle boots, it’s also perfect for weekends.

2. The puffa jacket

There’s no need to sacrifice warmth for style this season with the key coat styles being oversized, cosy and versatile.

An elevated puffer jacket is the ultimate new season investment. It works well with casual daywear, but smart styles such as this khaki version look just as good with eveningwear as they do with tailoring, jeans and a smart knit.

Style it as we saw on the a/w catwalks and wear it layered under a tailored crombie, or with an oversized scarf for the coolest coat style this winter.

3. The bright longline knit

Autumn’s bold colour palette spans 70’s inspired shades of brown as well as poppy Crayola brights, from postbox red to canary yellow and cobalt blue.

An elevated knit is the perfect new season investment, wear this bright red jumper with chic camel tailoring or a burgundy midi-skirt, or clash it with statement separates in pastel or primary blue for a distinct nod to the styling we saw on the autumn/winter catwalks.

4. The coatigan

This season’s key textures are super-comforting; oversized knitted jumpers and cardigans are the perfect pieces to layer over jeans, dresses or loose tailoring for an effortless, everyday look.

This charcoal grey cardigan is fine-knit enough not to look casual and oversized, while the darker tone means it works as well for evening as it does in the daytime.

Wear it with loose-fitting layers and cinch at the waist with a medium-width black leather belt.

5. The slouchy boots

The slouch boot is another key piece for autumn that references the Eighties, with designers showing every height, colour and fabric imaginable on the catwalks.

Given the colour palette of the season is brown – everything from oatmeal to caramel to tobacco – burgundy accessories work much better than black. This round-toe style is the perfect shape to dress down printed midi-dresses and dress up chic knitted separates.
