Anna Wintour’s reputation precedes her.
The editor-in-chief of American Vogue is known amongst fashion insiders as ‘Nuclear Wintour’, owing to her apparent ‘chilly’ disposition, and her preference for hiding behind an immaculate bob and large, dark sunglasses has always made her somewhat of an enigma.
So, hearing that she broke down in tears during Kanye West’s YeezySeason3 catwalk show in February, comes as quite a shock.
Speaking to American talk show host, Seth Myers, Wintour admitted that getting lost in the Labyrinthine basement of Madison Square Garden drove her to tears.
“I got there very early,” she says.
“They put me in this huge, sort of VIP section and I was the only person sitting there for about half an hour while we were waiting for the Kardashians to arrive en masse.”
After The Life of Pablo concert and the ‘migrant chic’ show, Wintour decides to take the opportunity to escape, saying:
“I did happen to notice that Jay Z had slid away, so I thought maybe I could sneak out after him without anybody noticing. But I slid into the basement of Madison Square Garden and I was lost there for half an hour, asking various people to let me out. I don’t know if you’ve ever been to the basement of Madison Square Garden…
“I was really in tears, and then this little security guard came up to me and said, 'Did your son play baseball for Collegiate (School)?' And I said yes. He said, 'Oh, I was his coach, can I help you?' And I said, 'Yes, please take me out of here.'”
It comes as a comfort to us all that even those as powerful as Wintour get a little flustered without GPS…
Wintour is currently promoting the new documentary The First Monday in May, about the infamous Met Gala.
