Since being scouted in a London pub at the tender age of 16, Suki Waterhouse's modelling career has certainly gone from strength to strength.
Having fronted campaigns for fashion powerhouses including Burberry, Marks and Spencer and H&M, the 23-year-old now commands red carpets at fashion events across the world and regularly shares envy-inducing images with her 729,000 followers on Instagram.
However, the model recently revealed in an interview with The Sunday Times that she has “spent a lot of the past year feeling quite anxious and not grounded”.
The model admitted that her steep rise to fame at a young age left her feeling more than a little bemused as to why people were so interested in her, questioning, “What is this thing about? What am I representing? Wearing clothes? My life?”
Describing her hectic work schedule, she went on to discuss the difficulties of maintaining a semblance of normal life when travelling to all corners of the globe
“Towards the end of last year I was going to Brazil for eight hours, going to Korea for a night, then going to New York, while trying to have so many other elements going on.
I remember thinking, ‘I should be so happy, because it is going so well.’ But you don’t have any time, and you’re running on adrenaline because you have to.”
Alongside the havoc of travelling constantly for her job, Suki also found the “brutal” world of modelling difficult to handle.
Speaking about the intense pressure of staying thin within the industry, she revealed, “It’s really hard being told, ‘You’re too fat.'”
She added, “Working in this business skews your reality of what you think is OK.”
Luckily, Suki has fellow model and close friend Georgia May Jagger, who she met at school, to help keep her grounded. Describing her school years with Georgia, she said, “We were the outcasts, but we were quite happy about that.”
She also described her time at school as a “total numb-off”, and said, “I sat through high school and stared into space for a good couple of years. I’d always have teachers being, like, ‘You look like you’re dead,’ as when I’m upset I can be quite disconnected.”
Having recently split up with former boyfriend Bradley Cooper, Suki is now fronting the launch of Amazon Fashion and looking forwards to moving into acting, having filmed two films due to hit cinemas next year.
She also plans to take this summer off and spend some time relaxing with friends.
“It’s about living and being my age. That’s what success is,” she adds.
