ASOS has dropped the trench coat to end all trench coats this season and it’s going viral for all the right reasons.
If there was one item, on and off the catwalks, that hit the spotlight this September, it was the trench coat. Don’t be fooled though, this wasn’t just any old trench coat, but rather a new and improved version.
Designers such as Erdem, JW Anderson and Michael Kors all served up iterations of the classic wardrobe staple on countless occasions, this time taking the traditional trench and reworking it with splices of checks, oversized sleeves, embroidered detail and even some designers just deconstructing the trench coat altogether.
Off the catwalk, street style’s biggest stars and fashion’s most stylish editors all opted for a trench coat as their outerwear of choice. And who can blame them? Universally appealing, timeless and easy to wear, the trench coat has become a wardrobe staple for good reason.
However, there is one trench coat so good, so chic, so wearable that it is storming ahead of the rest. Much like that Zara polka dot dress, ASOS’s trench coat with checked splice is winning outerwear for autumn. And we can see why. Coming up at that perfect mid-shin length, its checked panels and oversized shape add serious cool points to any outfit.
Coming in at an affordable £75 (you can easily pay over £100 for high street outerwear right now) and in ASOS Mainline and ASOS Curve, this coat actually is for everyone. Wear with denim and a sweatshirt for super-relaxed appeal, or a satin slip skirt and ankle boots when it comes to workwear; it will even work as the perfect finishing party piece come LBD season.
