Autumn 2016’s top fashion trends according to Google

The runways might decide what fashion trends are thrown into contention each season, but it’s pure people power that gets the final say on the looks that really blow up.

Once upon a time, designers were left in limbo following their Autumn/Winter shows, waiting the painful six months between Fashion Week and the new season to see which of their creations eventually caught the eyes (and credit cards) of shoppers. But the dark ages are over; Google now knows the answer well ahead of time.

We’ve already seen Pinterest’s take on the most trending looks for AW16, so now here’s what the fashion team at Google have learnt about the season ahead.

Spoiler alert: we’ll be looking good.

Autumn 2016: the top three trends

Google’s data analysts have pawed through the past few months’ worth of fashion searches, to pull out the three most popular fashion themes set to dominate the new season. From the UK to the States, here’s what people want in their autumn wardrobes.

1. Military chic

Bomber jackets are leading fashion’s military movement according to Google’s insights, with fashion fans looking for bomber shapes complete with prints and touches of colour.



Though a big look through spring and summer thanks to bombers cut from silk and satin or doused in bright colour and florals, expect a more utilitarian feel for autumn, with a return to muted shades and masculine vibes.

2. Bohemia

It’s official, the internet is obsessed with bohemian style. Cold shoulder shapes are leading the trend movement, say Google, with the off-the-shoulder tops seen on the likes of Kendall Jenner, Jourdan Dunn and Olivia Palermo enduring for another season.



Kimonos and ‘flower-child’ dresses are rising in popularity too, thanks to the relaxed, easy glamour and comfort they offer.

3. Quick-smart

Feeding off the laid-back attitude of the bohemia trend, this is all about fast and easy looks that can take us from work to weekend, with jumpsuits leading the way.



One woman interviewed by Google sums it all up perfectly: “Rompers are great at helping you avoid decision fatigue without sacrificing style or comfort. Put one on and you're done.”

We’re right behind her, with a keen eye on the neat tailoring that’s set to turn jumpsuits into boardroom staples come September.
