Buying a new autumn-winter coat is a joy, whether you make it an annual pilgrimage or shell out every five years or so – pinning down a style to see you through months of daily wear is no easy feat, so once you’ve found The One, it becomes a beloved wardrobe staple.

Outerwear finishes and lifts an outfit (so much so that we sometimes want to wear it indoors so as not to break up the ensemble), but needs to be practical too. Which is why, year after year, the best winter coat is a classic style that never goes out of fashion.

Now Pinterest has released search data confirming what we all knew: the beloved camel coat is the most popular design, being searched for by the image-sharing site’s 175 million UK users more often than any other style.

As exemplified by the oft-pinned Zara number above (available on the website for £129), camel coats reign supreme thanks to being as easily worn in spring as in autumn and winter, an elegantly neutral shade versatile enough to match with pretty much any outfit and occasion.

You can go shorter, with a collar you can pop.

Or long, lightweight and flowing.

You could even mix it up with the second most popular coat style: trench.

Releasing the data as part of its inaugural UK Style Awards, Pinterest says there’s another coat trend seeing a spike of late – searches for puffa jackets have surged by 82% in the past month, while oversized coats have seen a 90% increase.

And a tip for your next spending session? The website has named Zara best for coat-shopping, with Monki a close second – reasonably priced high street for the win!
