The biggest event on the British fashion calendar took place last night at London’s Royal Albert Hall.
Hosted by comedian Jack Whitehall and model Karlie Kloss, The Fashion Awards 2017 saw the likes of Naomi Campbell, Rita Ora, Alexa Chung and Hailey Baldwin step out onto the red carpet, on a night which celebrated a seriously stylish year, and paid homage to some of fashion’s most iconic figures.
London-based Adwoa Aboah picked up the award for model of the year, presented by Erykah Badu and Loyle Carner. A worthy winner, the 25-year-old activist had tough competition, facing Bella and Gigi Hadid, Winnie Harlow and Kaia Gerber, but took the top spot after an incredible year which saw her land the coveted December Vogue cover under new editor Edward Enninful, a contract with Marc Jacobs, alongside her ongoing commitment to mental health causes, creating online community Gurls Talk.
American Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour presented Burberry designer Christopher Bailey MBE with the surprise award of the night for Outstanding Contribution to British Fashion, acknowledging his work in transforming Burberry since his arrival at the label in 2001.
However, it wasn’t all about speeches, as Rita Ora treated the audience to a rendition of Freedom by George Michael, in honour of Donatella Versace who took home the Fashion Icon award, presented by long-time friend Naomi Campbell and a whole host of supermodels, old and new.
Other winners to scoop top prizes on the night include Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri for her commitment towards positive change. Stella McCartney received recognition for her commitment to innovation within the industry, while Pat McGrath was the recipient of the Isabella Blow award for Fashion Creator.
Closing the show, an emotionally charged tribute was paid to Dame Natalie Massenet, who will be stepping down as Chairman of the British Fashion Council, a position she has held since 2013. The Net-a-Porter founder was showered with gold confetti, in what can only be described as a showstopping finale to this year’s awards.
On the style front, host Karlie Kloss made an impressive number of wardrobe changes ahead of each award, while the style set championed one seriously glitzy trend: sequins. Yes, sequins were the look du jour. Adwoa Aboah stepped out in a glittering jumpsuit by this year’s Emerging Talent winner, Halpern. Molly Goddard was another fan of the trend, wearing a pewter shift, while models Suki Waterhouse and Tallia Storm also gave the look their seal of approval.
