To say that fashion is not driven by inclusivity but exclusivity is an understatement. From a VIP culture that sees ‘nepo babies’ sitting along the front row to a dearth of diversity in castings and campaigns, the lack of representation and access for those from minoritised communities – particularly Black women – remains pervasive.

Breaking into fashion can feel impossible for people from marginalised backgrounds, who face ceilings that are difficult to shatter. And these problems undoubtedly persist year upon year, despite the industry’s claims to be making space for people of colour.

Yet rather than shying away from such an exclusive industry, many young women remain emboldened – bringing their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit to social media and setting up shop (literally) in order to write their own narratives.

Sante Koranteng, Miah Tihana, Aver Ukor and Grace Davies are four incredible small business owners who are spelling a new era for Black women in fashion. And now they’re about to take the industry by storm, as they join forces with Depop and My Runway Group this weekend to host the Black In Carnaby Concept Store Pop-Up.

Housed inside the bright hallways of Somerset House, this retail experience celebrates Black creativity and culture, with every featured business being Black-owned.

By creating visibility and opportunities for Black-owned businesses and artists, these women – along with the second-hand retail platform – are pushing for greater diversity in the fashion landscape.
