This off-the-shoulder Zara dress has been absolutely everywhere this summer

Every season, there are one or two high street pieces that blow up. Whether said piece is a Zara aviator jacket, a polka-dot Topshop blouse or an Urban Outfitters puffa, it seems as though you can’t walk down the street without seeing it on at least one woman. You see it on your commute, in the supermarket, and on Instagram. It’s so omnipresent that it’s almost – gulp – basic. And yet you still want it (that is, if you don’t own it already).

This summer’s everywhere item is a certain dress, and you’ll definitely have spotted it on your travels. It’s from Zara. It’s sort of plain, sort of dressy; the kind of frock you could wear to the beach, a barbeque or to a club. Like 90% of dresses sold in summer 2017, it features an off-the-shoulder Bardot neckline (note: this statistic may or may not hold up in court). And it’s very, very blue.

Comedian Lulu Krause first brought the ubiquity of the dress to our attention, with her Tumblr blog The Blue Off-The-Shoulder Dress From Zara.

Since 2016, she’s been posting a photo every time she spots the dress in the wild – and as you might expect, she’s had rather a lot of sightings.

Unsurprisingly, this exact style is currently sold out online. (More surprising, perhaps, is the fact that the most popular summer dress on Zara right now is totally different.)

However, there is a similar off-the-shoulder version in Zara’s eco-friendly JOIN LIFE range – and lookalike blue dresses have been produced by dozens of other retailers.

There’s this one, by Vero Moda at ASOS:

… And that’s just for starters.

The off-the-shoulder trend, inspired by the necklines favoured by Sixties fashion icon Brigitte Bardot, has been going strong for a couple of years now. If it feels a bit late to be investing in yet another summer frock, worry not: there are still plenty of off-the-shoulder dresses and tops in the shops for AW17. You just might have to invest in a new cardi, too.
