Summing up Copenhagen fashion in just three words, Denise Christensen, CEO of the Birger Christensen Collective, says “casual, classic and quality” – which essentially nails how we’ve always wanted our own wardrobes to be described.

“The Scandinavian girls have a sporty, casual simplicity around their lifestyle that can also be seen in the way they dress,” Christensen explains. “Scandinavian women favour wearable items: high-quality, beautifully made pieces that will never go out of style. It comes down to having a capsule wardrobe and not being afraid to dress with confidence.”

This almost exactly mirrors the answer of Rotate’s creative directors, Jeanette Madsen and Thora Valdimars, who say Copenhagen style is “elegant, casual and individual”.

“Danish women are good at finding hero pieces, like wide-leg trousers or a perfect jacket, and they build from the base, adding layering of their own unique style,” says Madsen. “These statement ‘Scandinavian’ basics create a sense of uniformity, but always with individual flair. Also, being able to bike in all shoes and clothing, dresses and heels included, is the actual key to Copenhagen style!”

Clearly, wearability is incredibly important, with no too-tight dresses or sky-high heels – which may explain why we’ve seen a wide range of trainers, trousers and waterproof coats worn by stylish show guests at this week’s wet and windy CPHFW.
