It seems the fashion world can’t get enough of cartoons.

Kitsch prints, comic book motifs and nostalgic slogan sweaters have been a mainstay on the catwalks for a season or so now. Disney Princesses and Minnie Mouse were the muses of choice for the Harrods Christmas windows and a London Fashion Week capsule collection respectively. And Gucci creative director Frida Giannini even created her own comic strip with Japanese Manga artist Hirohiko Araki, all inspired by her 2013 Cruise collection.

Trend forecaster and designer Jerome LaMaar has created a playful response to this love affair with the kitsch cartoon world – by dressing a series of cartoon characters in the latest runway looks. It’s not the first illustrated fashion/cartoon mash-up – remember the Fashion people as Simpsons and Spongebob Squarepants that we covered last year? And then there’s the Wear This To That blog, which imagines what members of the animal kingdom would wear to various social occasions.

But LaMaar’s illustrations have won us over because of the accuracy of his fashion/cartoon pairings. If Daria, the eponymous heroine of the cult MTV 90s cartoon show was chosen to model for anyone, we’d imagine it to be a subtly cool and offbeat label like Marni. Her best friend Jane (who we’ve just decided is the cartoon incarnation of model Leigh Lezark) would also be the perfect face for a hip NY brand like Alexander Wang. And of course Betty Boop would fall hook, line and sinker for Alaia’s ruffles and feminine silhouettes.
