Meet the new denim items looking to give your humble jeans a run for their money…

Jeans are one of those rare wardrobe items that look good on everyone.

You need items like this in your wardrobe – consistent and dependable clothes that you don’t need to think about, and everyone has their go-to pair.

But it’s easy to forget other types of denim can make a bigger statement than the perfect cut.

This season, the high street is encouraging us to get out of our denim comfort zone and explore other ways to embrace the blue.

Here are seven pieces to get excited about…

  • 1. The kimono

While the denim jacket is a classic, we’re loving the current trend for all things oversized.

This elongated coat is perfect for that summer late-afternoon-to-evening vibe, ready to wrap when the temperature dips. Plus, it has pockets, which we all know makes a piece dreamy.

Style it with black denim jeans and a white T-shirt or cami top.

  • 2. The crop top

Influenced by the rise of streetwear, Nineties music videos and our appetite for workout gear, the crop top is back in all its denim glory.

While this one won’t replace your workout sports bra/crop top, it’s perfect for summer days.

Layer it with even more denim (jeans and a jacket), or offset the tight fit by wearing your crop top with a classic trench and oversized cargo pants.

Embrace your inner-Nineties dream style with this crop top from Reserved.

  • 3. The skirt

While we tend to leave the denim minis to our teenage selves, the denim midi is where it’s really at.

Skirts are arriving in-store in all different shapes and sizes this season, from mid-thigh to midi-length as well as in faded, tie-dyed or distressed denim.

This one looks as good with trainers as it does slouchy boots.

  • 4. The pastel twist

Denim doesn’t have to be blue. Given it’s spring, it’s time to break out the pastels, from soft yellows to gentle lilacs.

Pastels are a trend we first saw in s/s 2018, with strong pastel suits making their way down the runway, but this season the pastels aren’t just limited to our work wardrobe.

Try matching a cropped denim jacket to these wide-legged culottes from Reserved for the perfect summery co-ord.

  • 5. The dress

The joy of having a denim dress in your wardrobe is that you don’t have to think about anything else – you just throw it on and head out.

Opt for a button shirt dress and wear it with some smart but comfy kicks.

    Your summer uniform, sorted.

  • 6. The shorts

Denim shorts are back for s/s 2019, but not as you know them.

This season, they take cues from cycling shorts – tight and cropped just above the knee.

Get them in classic black to pair with everything and anything in your wardrobe, from an oversized tee to a crisp white shirt.
