Dior has brought back its iconic Saddle bag, and it’s about to take over your Instagram and your wishlist for this season.
We know that fashion works in a cyclical manner. The cropped denim flares that are the hottest shape right now first came around in the Seventies. The broad-shouldered blazers peppering your wardrobe could be straight out of an Eighties boardroom, and the scrunchie we just told you to wear could only ever have hailed from the Nineties.
However, it almost seems too soon to be re-dipping our toes into Noughties fashion (will we ever be able to revisit a gypsy maxi dress with a circle waist belt?) but Dior has done it. The Noughties were rife with ‘it’ bags: the Fendi Baguette, the Mulberry Bayswater, the Chloé Paddington, the Louis Vuitton Speedy and, the most iconic of them all, the Dior Saddle bag.
The bag of choice for Noughties heroine Carrie Bradshaw became an instant hit with its easy to identify shape and abstract print. Of-the-moment superstars such as Mischa Barton, Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie were rarely seen without the logo version, becoming as familiar icons in their wardrobes as low-slung flares and oversized maxi dresses.
Maria Grazia Chirui, Dior’s creative director, has been pushing the house into the millennial sphere since her opening collection in 2016, when she sent models down the runway in slogan T-shirts that read, ‘We should all be feminists’. For the relaunch of Dior’s most iconic bag, Chiuri opted for a very 2018 approach – a massive influencer campaign which saw fashion’s most powerful Instagram stars posting pictures of the bag at exactly the same time across the world.
“I consider this icon of the house’s recent history the perfect accessory to deal with this battle that is daily life. Indeed, the saddle bag is a bag that is worn in exactly the same way as a shirt or jacket, and it’s so comfortable to wear with its long strap that you almost forget it’s there,” Maria Grazia Chiuri said in a statement from the brand.
While new versions of the Saddle bag have launched in store and online now, dig into your own archives if you were a fan of the original or try vestiairecollective.com or therealreal.com to bring some nostalgia back into your wardrobe.
Remastered or retro, Dior’s Saddle bag will undoubtedly be the bag to carry this season.
