Seeing as the nineties are now officially retro, and nostalgia for the decade of bomber jackets, flannel shirts and minimalism was all over the Spring/Summer 2013 runways, it makes sense that one of the decade’s most iconic street wear labels is digging into their archives – via cult concept boutique Opening Ceremony.
DKNY, who launched in 1989 and pioneered street wear during the period, have partnered with Opening Ceremony on a limited capsule collection of 15 re-issued pieces from when the brand exploded onto the fashion scene – and we’ve got an exclusive preview to show you.
Picked from the 1991-4 collections, the re-issued runway styles range from body-conscious body suits (remember the ones with poppers you had back then?) and t-shirts printed with New York’s skyline, to logo-heavy sportswear and puffer jackets. Unisex t-shirts and hoodies will also be released alongside women’s clothing, and prices will range from about £90 for tees and bodysuits to around £410 for outerwear.
Opening Ceremony, who have collaborated with nineties footwear stalwarts Timberland, plus nostalgic childhood favourites like The Muppets and Where the Wild Things Are, have a "unique and creative point of view mixed with 90's throw backs” that appealed to DKNY, according to Executive Vice President of Design Jane Chung.
Olivia Kim, VP of Creative for Opening Ceremony added that whilst the collaboration did reach into archives, the sponsored_longform would bring to light “select, quintessential styles that feel fresh even today” – and as this exclusive campaign shot shows, the looks have all the hallmarks of early nineties fashion classics.
