US company sparks online furore with sexist earplugs

It's no secret that, as women, we generally pay more for stuff than men.

From the deodorants, razors and jeans that cost women an average of 37% more under the 'pink price tax' to the soon-to-be-abolished tax on those 'luxury' sanitary products, it can be costly being a woman.

And now an earplug company has come under fire on social media for its blatantly sexist brand of 'female' and 'male' earplugs in which - you guessed it - the earplugs for women are more expensive than the ones for men.

Any woman wishing to part with $6.99 (£4.93) to purchase 14 pairs of "silky soft" earplugs would be disappointed to discover that the male equivalent costs 50 cents less, or $6.49 (£4.57). particularly since the women's earplugs are actually smaller than the men's version.

Tweeted by a man who discovered the earplugs side by side in a shop in the US, the sexist pricing of the earplugs has caused a furore on Twitter.

"Obviously. I mean, we make so much more - oh," wrote one woman. "It's very infuriating!" Tweeted another.

Hearos, the company that makes the earplugs, has also come under fire for their blatantly sexist messaging.

While the women's earplugs are encased in pink packaging, with the promise they will help the user to 'sleep pretty', the men's earplugs come in blue packaging and offer 'xtreme protection' for the 'hearos' who wear them.

Over the past 24 hours, Twitter users have been taking to the social media site with typically witty remarks on the misogynistic brand.

Hearos are yet to comment.
