As fashion fans will no doubt remember, Gigi Hadid and Tommy Hilfiger teamed up for a lucrative sponsored_longform, TommyxGigi, last year.
The collection – which included plenty of Breton tops and sailor trousers – flew off the shelves, cementing the pair’s friendship. However it’s now been revealed that the 21-year-old didn’t always fit in with Hilfiger’s label.
Speaking in a new interview, the 65-year-old designer explained that his team were concerned that Hadid was too big to model on the catwalk last year.
Speaking with Yahoo Style’s Joe Zee, he said: “Our casting director said, ‘She doesn’t really fit because you know she’s not quite as tall as the other girls, she’s not quite as thin.
They eventually reached their own warped version of a compromise, insisting that Hadid should wear a red, white, and blue poncho during Hilfiger’s New York Fashion Week in 2015.
Addressing the bagginess of the item, Hilfiger admitted: “It covered a lot of her body unfortunately, but it received millions of hits.”
The designer managed to salvage his relationship with Hadid after the slight, by asking her to come and work with him on an exclusive range.
“I said, you know, ‘Why don’t we ask her to design a line with us?’” he explained. “I said, “Gigi, come design this with me, we’ll do a Gigi x Tommy couture line.’”
Following the success of the collection, Hilfiger asked Hadid to return to his catwalk later that same year. And, this time, he made no attempts to cover her up in outsized, baggy items.
Since the interview was published, Hilfiger has sought to clarify his comments, saying the model is “the epitome of perfection”.
He told Page Six: “The casting people put Gigi in the poncho, and I was not happy. I was saying, ‘Don’t hide her body.’ Even though the poncho ended up being the best-selling piece, I was very unhappy.
“The suggestion that I thought she wasn’t thin enough upsets me to no end.”
It’s not the first time that Hadid has changed the way we view both supermodels and women.
Earlier this year, she fought back against a man who grabbed her without consent outside a Paris Fashion Week show.
“I'm a HUMAN BEING — and had EVERY RIGHT to defend myself,” she wrote on Twitter at the time.
“How dare that idiot thinks he has the right to man-handle a complete stranger.”
and had EVERY RIGHT to defend myself. How dare that idiot thinks he has the right to man-handle a complete stranger. He ran quick tho 👊🏼😏🐱— Gigi Hadid (@GiGiHadid) September 22, 2016
Hadid has also penned several essays on body image – proving once and for all that she’s unwilling to accept anyone’s judgement of her looks.
"If you just kind of embrace yourself, like, other people accept you in the same way," Hadid told Daily Mail Australia. “And I think that's really cool.
“You don't always have to go with the cookie-cutter version of what people tell you you're supposed to be.”
