Each season H&M creates its Studio collection, a covetable capsule of directional pieces and elevated everyday items that aim to be the fashion backbone to your wardrobe for the months to come.

This season, the Studio team has taken inspiration from mid-century icons Marlon Brando, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe, as well as cult TV series Twin Peaks, creating a mix of ladylike pieces with borrowed-from-the-boys wardrobe staples.

For the a/w 2018 collection, the designers have mastered super-classic pieces with an edge, which can be easily mixed and matched to create your own distinctive look. Here, H&M design director Pernilla Wohlfahrt decodes your staples for the season.

The Leather Shirt

The western trend is still big, and this leather shirt is a grown-up way to add something trend-led without committing to a ‘look’ that isn’t you. Layer over a roll-neck or wear open with a logo T-shirt.

Pussy-Bow Blouse

Taking inspiration from the uber-femininity of the Fifties is the pussy-bow blouse. For a modern take, style it with dark turn-up jeans – the kind that Marilyn Monroe might wear.

Fifties skirt

This season there was a real focus on strong women (think Jackie Kennedy and Katharine Hepburn). The shape of this skirt is classically Fifties but the bright ombre colourway adds a modern twist.

Turn-Up Jeans

We’re seeing a huge rise in rigid straight-leg denim as we continue to move away from skinny jeans. For this season we want to bring some utility to our customers and have used a crisp, selvedge denim.

Jeans, £49.99, H&M
