Wood later went on to explain she made the choice to eschew the traditional dress in favour of the tux to “make sure that young girls and women know they aren’t a requirement” and show they should “just be yourself”.
And now her fellow red carpet attendee, Octavia Spencer, has spoken out about her own decision to swap a dress for a pantsuit to attend the ceremony – and she had an equally kickass reason for doing so.
“I chose to wear a tuxedo and in doing that, I was able to be freer,” the Hidden Figures actress told told Ellen DeGeneres.
“Less underwear. A lot less underwear,” she added.
Brilliantly, her outfit choice also meant the star was able to enjoy the ceremony more than usual, and she admitted that she had never had “as much fun” as she did at the awards.
“Everybody was like, ‘Oh you’re so happy, and they thought it was because of the box office’," she said. “And I’m thinking, my feet don’t hurt and I am not cinched. It was wonderful.”
Now the actress hopes more women will feel empowered to follow in her footsteps.
“More women need to say, ‘You know what? We’re going to wear the pantsuit,’” she added.
We couldn’t agree more.
