Last week, high-end designer Balenciaga raised eyebrows when it released a £1,670 version of Ikea’s humble Frakta bag, which usually retails at 40p a pop.

The French fashion house’s Arena Extra-Large Shopper Tote Bag, an oversized shopper made from “blue wrinkled, glazed leather”, quickly went viral on social media as incredulous users clocked both its similarity to Ikea’s classic style and its eye-watering price tag.

Of course, the bag didn’t go unnoticed at Ikea HQ – and our favourite purveyor of flat packs and meatballs was quick to respond.

AdWeek reports that the brand has released a tongue-in-cheek ad, titled “The Original”, which features a lovingly shot image of the Frakta bag accompanied by instructions on “how to identify an original Ikea Frakta bag”.

The ad reads:

1) Shake it. If it rustles, it’s the real deal.

2) Multifunctional. It can carry hockey gear, bricks and even water.

3) Throw it in the dirt. A true Frakta is simply rinsed off with a garden hose when dirty.

4) Fold it. Are you able to fold it to the size of a small purse? If the answer is yes, congratulations.

5) Look inside. The original has an authentic Ikea tag.

6) Price tag. Only $0.99.

A representative for the brand even spoke to Today, saying, “We are deeply flattered that the Balenciaga tote bag resembles the Ikea iconic sustainable blue bag for 99 cents.

“Nothing beats the versatility of a great big blue bag!”
