If you’ve never heard of Iris Apfel, it’s time to get to know. The irrepressible style icon has had major museum exhibitions dedicated to her; starred in an award-winning documentary about her presence on the New York fashion scene; and featured in more designer campaigns than you can shake a stick at.
Just look at her: is this not exactly the kind of woman you want to be when you grow up?
And at the grand age of 94, Apfel can still tap into the zeitgeist. Case in point: the former businesswoman and White House interior designer has just launched a range of Apfel-themed emojis, GIFs and stickers.
Admittedly, Apfel doesn’t sound like a regular emoji user in her day-to-day life. “I’m a little old for emojis, and I didn’t know what they were,” she says.
“But everyone seems to like them, and I want everyone to have a good time. If my face makes people happy, I’m all for it.”
“She’s an icon whose appeal spans multiple generations, and we see these emojis as a fun way to amplify the campaign through mobile first,” says Nancy Slavin, senior vice president of marketing for Macy’s Merchandising Group. “Her fans are going to go crazy!”
Iris: we salute you.
