Kate and William have kicked off their royal tour of Pakistan in style.

Last night, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge touched down in Pakistan for a five-day official royal visit. This trip marks the first royal visit to the country in 13 years and has been dubbed by Kensington Palace as “the most complex tour undertaken by The Duke and Duchess to date, given the logistical and security considerations” and sees the royal couple supported by 1,000 Pakistani police officers over the duration of their stay. A crucial element of this visit will be Kate and William’s diplomacy skills and etiquette which are instrumental to strengthening ties with the country and the wider region.

An important part of that charm offensive is making sure you are dressed for the occasion – something Kate Middleton knows a thing or two about. For her first outfit of the tour and her stepping-off-the-plane moment, Kate turned to a Catherine Walker & Co aqua blue long-dress-and-trouser look which paid tribute to the traditional salwar kameez worn by women in Pakistan.

The modest ombre style outfit has a multitude of meanings but most prominently Kate chose the atelier of Catherine Walker & Co who had previously worked closely with Princess Diana and had in fact designed a pale pink sarong-style embellished dress for her own visit to Lahore, Pakistan in 1991.

The colour also has significant meaning as that shade of turquoise is said to bring protection as well as having a very real likeness to the outfit that the late Princess Diana wore in Pakistan in 1996 when visiting a hospital in Lahore.

The royal visit, which was requested by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, will pay respect to the historical relationship between Britain and Pakistan. From what we can see Kate and William are off to a great start.
